Final Folio

Free Choice

I choose this knowing it would be a challenge and not knowing if it would actually work but it did. I printed out a big checked board that i made in photoshop and dripped water down using the refection almost like a very wide angle lens to see the pattern behind, but by doing this u can also see everything else around i found it was very much like shooting chrome as you can see very refection. I dont like the black refection in the side of the drop but i cannot do anything about that as i needed something to make the drop with. I also do not like the motion blur but because i was using the blad the fastest shutter speed was 1/800 which was not fast enough. I tried using tungsten lights and using my camera but the effect was not the same.

Macro

I was shooting another macro shot when i found it was just not working, so i went on the search in between the studios for something interesting. I found this bug on a very small leaf i was looking at. This bug is amazingly small as i shot this a 1:1 with the macrolens on the blad and still needed to crop in a little bit to get a good composition.

Chrome

This photo was very fun tring to eliminate refection's and was a very hard challenge. I first started by tring to add all white then add black but this was extremely difficult and i eventually ended up introducing white to black and all using only one light to light the chrome, one to light the tyre and one for the background.

Large format camera movements

I used the sinar back on the large format for this shot demonstrating the shimplug principle. I tried to reference the tea cup ballet by olive cotton in my angle and lighting but it was quite hard due to the shape of the cups. I tried to redo my large format shot and demonstrate swing but it ended up worse than this photo. The large format camera was exteremley hard to use due to the line up points were not accurate.

Glass - Dark Field

I choose the typical product shot as i found that almost noone else was doing this for glass. I used a fairlu shallow depth of feild to throw the shot glass a bit out of focus as it is not real bourbon in the shot glass. I used a snoot to create a spot light on the background over the bottle to almost show that jim beam is in the spotlight and emphasis the bottle and product. I used two soft boxes and a reflector to light the subject and create the white edges.

Glass - White feild

I shot this on the light table and lit it from behind, got the background light right to the perfect gradient and put on the vase. It is very simple and quite easy to light. I filled up the vase with water this reflected through and perfectly light the whole glass vase due to its shape. I introduced a few black cards but it didn't seem to do alot as my surroundings were all very dark creating the black refection's on the edges.

I tried many different thing to make the image more interesting such as many different dyes and compositions but i found that simplicity was the key as Ginettes goldfish out of her bag was great. It worked very well in this shot here and is quite interesting.

More macrosimages

Another two images that i was thinking of using.

And yes they were taken in the studio with a hasselblad, i found the bugs in the alley between the two studios.

The photos were shot at 1:1 but then cropped in for better composition.

Chrome

This was amazingly hard to shoot, I started by tring to make it all white then introduce black but that didn't work so i ended up introducing white to black.

Glass

My second attempt at glass or maybe my optional Photo.

Glass On White - unedited

These ones are the unedited versions as you can see i have lots of little problems with these including spotting cropping etc. Again i might reshoot if i have time.

Glass on Black - unedited

My shots for my glass on black shot with DSLR. These are the unedited versions as you can tell i need to dodge and burn a little bit and lots on spotting on the glass, even some straightening.
I am fairly happy with the results but if i have time i might reshoot with a few extra ideas.

Intro to Cyclorama

This week we learnt how to light a photograph going to be deepetched. We leant that you must use a fair few lights almost a minimum of 4. 2 to light the background evenly and your light on the subject. This will help alot when using the cyclorama for our imaging assignment and some of our folio work.

After we then just worked on our final folio work and we will be working on that for the rest of the semester.

Copying

Task 1 - Shoot with DSLR using polarising filters on camera and lights.

The photo was a bit speckled with high lights along the frame with out the polarising filters. When we put the filters on it made a huge difference and eliminated all the highlights and making the image much more attractive.

Task 2 - Shoot with simar back on the large format camera, done with mulit shot and single shot

The mulitshot was amazingly better than the single shot. You can see in the single shot the colour fringing almost colours the image. The second image is the multi shot which is amazingly sharp and perfect. I will defiantly be using the Sinar back multi shot for my folio. shots.

More tilt Shift

Eyes are in focus

Feet and legs are very out of focus

These are the second set of shots done using selective tilt shift. These were on a DSLR using a tilt shift lens to selectively focus on deferent parts of the body and face.

The 3rd set of photos using the large format with the digital back was not completed due to time constraints as we we ran out of time and almost went into our second lesson. I was really looking forward to using the large format with the digital back also.

In Camera Tilt shift

Group with Steve and Andrew

When putting these images onto my computer they all turned green im not sure why but i had to convert to black and white.

These three images were shot on the hasselblad with the tilt shift adapter.

The first shot was done using the tilt down to focus on the whole image

second shot was done but using the a bit of shift and rotating the lens.

third shot was done on 0 just to show the normal effect of just focus on one point with the depth of field.

Other shots and more details such as degrees of tilt and shift will be up once other group members post theirs.

Week 6 - Macro

This week we focused on macro photography which was very fun and i learnt heaps of useful hints. Unfortunately i cannot show the photos that we took because andrew lost his memory card containing the images (if we can recover the images i will post them).

We shot one photo of a stamp with a DSLR and one of a watch with the Hasselblad. This is the info from the shot including calculations for Macro tubes.

Shot 1 : Watch Shot 2 : Stamp
Magnification Factor 0.5x or 1:2 1x or 1:1
Camera Hasselblad H3d2 5d M11
Sensor Size mm 33.1 x 44.2 36 x 24
Lens focal length 80mm 90mm Macro
ISO 100 100
Extension Tubes Yes No
Focal Distance 120 180
Bellows Extension 2.25 4
Stops Increased 1 2
Light reading N/A 2.8f 1/8 sec
Adjusted Exposure N/A 2.8f 1 sec

As you can see we did not achieve the light reading or Adjusted exposure for the watch as we ran out of tim due to yet another Hasselblad failure and waiting for our extension tubes from other groups. We did achieve fairly well done stamp and watch photos that i was quite happy with even though we ran out of time.

It was a great workshop and will be very useful in the future. I am still a bit sloppy with the Calculations but just need some more practice.

Week 5 - Chrome

This week we had a go a to shoot chrome and shinny objects. This defiantly turns out to be the hardest thing to shoot in the studio. We tried so many different things trying to light this coffee grinder such as completely surrounding it with a light box, changing camera angle, lighting with only reflectors and completely surrounding it with the soft box. In the end we went for the soft box on top looking straight down reflector underneath and two reflectors to the side. I am fairly happy with the lighting on the object but or composition is fairly bad.

It was a very fun and challenging assignment and should be fun to try chrome a bit more in the future.

Week 4 - Glass

This workshop was one of the best workshops we have had over the whole year, I learnt so much and many tricks of the trade of beer photography.

We had a guest teacher for who used to shoot lots of beer photography, after this i am now very keen to shoot beer for my glass products. I think it will be very fun to experiment with all the tricks he taught us.

This shot was what looks like something a bit naughty haha.
The grey in the foreground is very distracting but i like the effect of the dark edges on the bottle. It also needs to be pulled in alot closer to not throw away pixels when cropping.

The hasselblads for the second time in a row have failed us, 1st time our CF cards didn't work in them and still don't and now it was saying magazine error. This gave us little time to get the shot done.

This shot was done extremely quick as we were packing up. we basically left our lighting setup from the last shot and chucked a piece of black card for the background and chucked in the glass.

Overall it was a very fun workshop and cant wait to try some more glass and chrome.
